Cracolândia, Portuguese for Crackland, is an area in São Paulo’s old downtown completely overrun by crack cocaine users, just a few steps from the city’s main concert hall and some of it’s most prestigious museums. Spread over several blocks, it’s a landscape of human devastation resembling a dystopian zombie movie. As the region, close to some of the São Paulo's trendiest up and coming neighborhoods and one the areas best served by public transportation in the city, is slowly gentrifying, several attempts were made to end Cracolândia. Most of them having as their main concern the development potential of the region instead of the well being of the users. The former mayor tried damage reduction measures through social workers, the current one sent the police with stun bombs and tear gas. All failed.
