Nelson and his wife Aida started an association to fight lithium mining in the Barroso region. If the planned mine in Covas do Barroso goes ahead they will loose much of the pastures where their cows graze

She and and her husband, Nelson, are among the leaders of the fight of the residents of the village against the plans of the Australian mining company Savannah to open a lithium mine less than 500 meters from the center of their village. The mine would divert the river and springs that water their fileds, making them unable to feed their animals or grow their crops.
