She depended on income from growing eucalyptus to sell to paper making companies, but had to give up her trees as part of the village's plan to eradicate the eucalyptus from the surroundings of the village and replace them with oak, cork and other more fire resistant trees, all native from the region. Two houses in Ferraria were burned in the fires that killed 65 people in nearby Pedrógão Grande in June.
