  • Aida Gomes, a farmer in Covas do Barroso, tends to her cows. She and and her husband, Nelson, are among the leaders of the fight of the residents of the village against the plans of the Australian mining company Savannah to open a lithium mine less than 500 meters from the center of their village. The mine would divert the river and springs that water their fileds, making them unable to feed their animals or grow their crops.

  • Portuguese flag on a hill overlooking Covas do Barroso, one of the villages leading the fight against the lithium mines in the Barroso region. The mountains behind the village contain a large lithium vein that the Australian mining company Savannah is fighting in court to start mining. The open pit mine would be less than 500 meters from the center of the village and would require changing the course of the river that crosses the village, threatening the springs that irrigate the fields of most local farmers
